I got the chance to illustrate the cover to this week Guardian Guide (24th Sept), featuring Ryan Gosling. It initially started as a piece about his new film Drive but became more about the actor and his life/films rather than just focusing on Drive (hence the dog/Hollywood star in the Grand theft inspired backdrop). Thanks to Stephen Jenkins (art Director at the Guide) who steered the ship. Here is a bit of the process behind the cover.

Here is my submission to Project: Rooftops Spider-Man:Webhead 2.0 competition, which should be announced in the near future, intrigued to find out how well this concept went down. Spidey’s got the best costume in the business, there's nothing quite like it so redesigning something that iconic is gonna be tricky. Successful or not here’s my attempt at something a bit different. The all grey /blue outfit was the one submitted, the red and grey was an after thought.

I was a huge fan of Marvels’ Generation X when it was first released way back in the mid 90s, although it didn’t take long for it to go a bit naff, those first few years with Lobdell and Bachalo running things were pretty cool. LA BALADE SAUVAGE

This initially started of as one half of a pair of posters for a fictitious French New Wave film. The other half was going to be the male protagonist of the story sat at the opposite side of the table, may or may not get round to producing that 2nd poster someday.
Anyway as things progressed the image went from being set in a Parisian café to and American diner. So in the end it kind of ended up feeling more like Terrence Malick’s Badlands (a film loosely based on the Starkweather-Fugate killing spree of the 1950's) if directed by Jean-Luc Godard. The Font and credits are based on the French poster for Badlands, with credits beings an amalgamation of the two directors works. La Balade Sauvage is what Badlands was titled in France upon its release, which translates to “the wild ride”.

The Bad Tuesdays

I got the chance to revamp the covers for The Bad Tuesdays, series by Benjamin J. Myers. Starting with Book 3, Blood Alchemy, which is yet to be released and worked backwards, illustrating the covers for the first two books. They should be out later this year from Orion Books! Haven’t posted for a while soooo here are a few images I created for the latest Tiger beer campaign. The full colour image was my first attempt, but it was decided that it was a little too “Slick and airbrushed”, which it was, but I was pretty pleased with the shading, so I thought I would post it here anyway!

Well here we go! It has taken a just shy of a month to colour this image, Far too long, but its been a matter of stealing what time I can in-between my current workload.
It’s been great to do something, that doesn’t really have a purpose other than wanting to create an image that excites me. It has prepped the way for some new ideas, and given me a bit of a creative injection, trans dimensional assassins and intergalactic bounty hunters next up!

It’s been a hectic few months of late. I have illustrated 13 books over the last 6 months, about 180 ish drawings in total, including a number of covers. Some turned out great and some….well didn’t, but its been a huge learning curve and has really pushed me further into being better at what I do.
One of the most enjoyable was a series of educational books for Rising Stars called Shadows, written by Paul Blum, aimed at 10-14 year olds with reading difficulties. This was the second series of books I’ve illustrated in the shadows series.

Here ‘s the blurb
Shadows is set in the near future, where an alien invasion has left the Earth devastated and a mysterious organisation called The Firm hold power. The series follows the story of Matt Merton who works for the firm and is trained to identify and kill The Enemy - the aliens among us ...

And here is a selection of the cover work I did as well as a couple of my fav interior illos. Thanks go to Sasha and Jess at Rising stars and Tina at Pentacorbig for putting all together and the encouragement!

I got my copy through the post this morning, and I’m quite pleased with the result, included here are a few of the roughs I did and how it finally looks in magazine itself. Alien Remake?

Rumour has it they are going to remake Alien! (It's 30 years old this year!!) Alien is one of my favourite films, and as far as I’m concerned should be left well alone! Ridley Scott is attached as producer and commercials director Carl Erik Rinsch has been touted to direct. I wasn’t familiar with Rinsch work, but checked it out, and was blown away with it! Perhaps to effects heavy, but ace none the less

Leave Alien alone and go make something something new, if it looks as good as the ads, it should look great.

Which reminded my to go back and check out Alive in Joburg, the short Film Neill Blomkamp directed before he headed to District 9. Always loved Blomkamp’s short Films, even the Citroën ads with the dancing transformer were kinda cool!

It's story of aliens landing in South Africa and the prejudice they encounter!
Looks cool. so lets hope its got a good enough story to carry it off!

Here is a Pin-Up I did over a year ago; it was something I started, without really knowing where I was going with it. I got at the point were I was getting a little sick of looking at it, so I stuck some text on it and called it done. (See Blog entry Friday, August 24, 2007
Organise before they rise! ) It was supposed to be a kind of a style taster for a comic book I was planning, which I eventually scrapped. Instead I decided it needed a bit more work, to finish it off as a stand alone peace, so I tinkered with the colours and dropped in the car, I think its complete now, so this will hopefully be the final edit.

Hopefully the new site will be ready some time in the new-year, I just need to get a good selection of new work completed first, so there is something new to look at. Games of the Fuuuuuture!

Here’s a draft I did for a well known games magazine, It was one of four illustrations, highlighting aspects of the future of the video games (In this case sound), which never made it past this draft stage, as the whole article it was to accompany crumbled. I think it was a case of the client having an idea in their head, just not a clear one, so I guess I missed the mark on this one. Still I think it could have worked out into an interesting piece, if we’d pushed on.

The Good, the Bad and the Weird

I've attended the 22nd Leeds international film festival over the last couple of weeks, which was really good. Managed to see quite a few films this year, including death metal romantic musical comedy Detroit Metal City and Bruce Campbell’s latest, My Name Is Bruce!. But my favorite by far was The Good, the Bad and the Weird a South Korean western film directed by Kim Ji-woon (A Tale of Two Sisters and A Bittersweet Life) Over the top action ..all the way, loved it,if you get the chance go see!!

Dancing Stage Universe 2

I did some work for Konami Digital Entertainment, a few months back they approached me about doing the packing shot for their new Dancing Stage game on the X box 360 here in Europe. Had fun doing this one as they pretty much left me up to my own devices, so it turned out to be a pretty smooooth project!! Not a Dance matt man myself, But its Konami right!! So next time it might be Silent Hill or Metal Gear… Right? ;-)

Well, I’ve been very slack, on then old updating front of late, its been a weird kind of summer, with some ongoing projects that have kept me busy, Unfortunately not a great deal to show, So here a little pin up I had chance to squeeze in!! Kind of started it without knowing where it was going and this result!! It's kind of a style taster for the comic book I’m working on, its still very early days, my writing skills need some fine tuning but its getting their slowly.

Also been thinking of selling a few prints, so any of you out there that have any preferences to work you’d like to see printed up, shout out!

The Metal Man Project

dopepope kindly asked me to contribute to the 2nd Volume of The Metal Man Project! The idea is that as a kid dopepope drew a comic called Metal Man about a humanoid Robot that went crazy and pulled knives on people.
So he has invited several artists to create a piece utilizing
the head and logo from his original comic. The rest of the image can be whatever we want it to be, and whatever style we like.
So here is my effort! And since were are approaching the release of The Transformers movie, I based it loosely on an old Transformer toy and kinda fused it with one of those retro tin robot collectables.

Ben Templesmith (3o Days of Night, Singularity 7!) asked me to do a pin-up for his IDW series Wormwood:Gentleman corpse! I of course jumped at the chance of portraying a sentient maggot inhabiting a corpse which he animates, develops an English accent, addiction to Guinness, cigarettes, and strong women, who wouldn't! Not sure what issue it will be in , but I'll be sure to give a shout out when I know, I’ve included the Pencil sketch so you can see the progression, before I hit the magic key that does all the colour work for me!;-)

If you haven't seeen The Proposition, i recommend it to anyone! a truly excellent film, Go watch it: Nick Cave writes gory Aussie Western set in late-19th century Australia, Cpt. Stanley (Ray Winstone) has captured the younger two siblings of the notorious Burns brothers. With them in custody he offers middle brother Charlie (Guy Pearce) a deal: head into the outback to kill older brother Arthur (Danny Huston), and the youngest (Richard Wilson) won’t be hanged.I enjoyed the movie so much I decided to do an illo based on the character of Charlie Burns, it took some time to get that dusty outback feel, but i think it works!!

Contributed an image to the Ilove4play, project. Pat Boyer (The Urban Cowboy) has gathered together a wide selection of artists (including Sarah Beetson, Montana Forbes, Nico Stinghe, Claire McMahon) to contribute sexually charged artwork, At the moment, the work is only available to see online, but its early days yet!
